Compton Abbas Airfield

Directions: Take the B3081 through Verwood ,Sixpenny Handley and Tollard Royal. Once through Tollard Royal look for some grey farm houses on the right about two to three miles down the road. Just after these houses is a turning on the left, take this and the airfield is on the right.

Photo Interest:- Acknowledged as one of the prettiest airfields in the country, it is always popular with visiting light aircraft. Several event days see upwards of 50 - 60 visiting aircraft of all shapes and sizes. There is no problem photographing from anywhere along the car park fence, although your view can be blocked by aircraft being parked up as they arrive. You will need a 200mm or longer to fill the frame with flying aircraft. Once they are parked up you are within 20 feet of them. Toilets and refreshments are available with an outside seated area to the cafe. Free car park. Lots of visiting sports cars and motorcycle clubs give added interest. The British Aerobatic event is well worth a look. This is held on a Friday/Sat by way of a change.(Sunday being used if bad weather shuts flying down on one of the designated days).

Drawbacks:- It's on top of a hill and you will suffer in any inclement or cold weather. The wind can be ferocious. Obviously the weather will dictate the amount of traffic flying in and out. Landing can be cancelled if the strip is too wet.
